![]() I agree with Alex Ross that all these debates over whether classical music is dead or not, is a waste of time, because it will never change anything. To make that passage relevant in the 1920s, all you need to do is to change the last two objects to Jazz and gramophone 1960s, Beatles and TV and 2010s, smartphone and Spotify. But the anxiety over the supposedly dying classical music hasn't changed for a much longer time. That is the first paragraph of Greg Sandow's brilliant article, Why Classical Music Needs Rock & Roll, dates from 1996, which seems to be a long long time ago. Or maybe just reinventing its marketing, but in any case doing something to make it come alive - and assure its survival - in an age of O.J. At the end of the paper I will play with some ideas which sprung from the study of the physical subjects under debate at that epoch, mainly time and gravitation. ![]() I will point out that, amongst the many objections against the theory of evolution (most of which were of a theological nature), those issuing from the world of physics were the most effective, leading to a debate which was very fertile and culturally relevant. ![]() In this paper, in particular, I will describe the impact of Darwin's theory on astrophysics and cosmology, despite their apparent distance from Darwin's field of work. ![]() ![]() Once presented, in the mid-19th century, the theory offered many interesting ideas to those who chose either to embrace it or to reject it, suggesting lines of thought for the understanding of nature. how Darwin's theory is to be considered an essential law of nature. Have you ever wondered whether the law of evolution of species by natural selection extends beyond the sphere of biology? In that case I hope this contribution with its provocative title-it's almost as if I am considering the use of two different units of measure to estimate the age of the universe, the well-known Kelvin and a made-up "Darwin"-will provide a satisfactory answer, showing clearly. ![]()
